The White Procession

Congregants of the Fifohazana Malagasy movement during the traditional Sunday procession, dressed in immaculate white garments (Madagascar).

These congregants are members of the Fifohazana ("Revival") movement, a significant spiritual renewal movement within the Malagasy Lutheran Church (Fiangonana Loterana Malagasy). Rooted in the early 20th century, the movement began as a grassroots Christian revival among the Malagasy people, emphasizing personal conversion, spiritual discipline, and holistic healing.
Primarily composed of Malagasy Christians, the movement places a strong focus on spiritual healing and exorcism, believing in the active presence of both benevolent and malevolent spiritual forces. Members are deeply committed to service, offering care to the poor, the sick, and the marginalized. Their practices are guided by rigorous prayer, Bible study, and an emphasis on living a life of moral and physical cleanliness.
One of the distinctive features of the Fifohazana movement is its lay leadership. Evangelism and healing are often carried out by laypeople rather than ordained clergy, and women play a prominent role as evangelists, spiritual counselors, and healers. This emphasis on lay ministry contributes to the movement’s grassroots vitality and strong communal bonds.
The traditional white garments worn during processions symbolize purity, renewal, and spiritual devotion. These processions, held especially on Sundays, are expressions of unity and public witness, reinforcing the movement's core values of faith, discipline, and community.
