The daily activities in a traditional Moroccan tannery (Morocco).
In the heart of Fez lies one of the oldest tanneries in the world, where skilled artisans continue to practice leather-making techniques that have been passed down through generations. These tanneries, are renowned for their vibrant dyeing pits and the strong, distinctive smell of the natural materials used.
The process begins with soaking animal hides in large stone vats filled with a mixture of cow urine, quicklime, water, and salt to soften the skins and remove hair. After several days, the hides are washed and then transferred to other vats containing natural dyes made from ingredients like saffron, poppy flower, and indigo. Artisans work by hand, using traditional tools and relying on their senses and experience to judge when the leather is ready.
This labor-intensive craft is not only a cornerstone of Morocco's artisanal economy but also a living testament to the country's rich cultural heritage. The tanneries operate as cooperative networks, providing jobs and supporting local families. Despite the challenging working conditions, many workers take great pride in preserving a tradition that continues to attract visitors from around the world.
