Portrait of a tea picker at work (Madagascar).
During the harvest season, hundreds of workers move through the tea bushes each day with practiced gestures, collecting the youngest leaves by hand. The work in the plantation helps sustain the livelihood of entire communities, providing both economic stability and a sense of continuity in daily life.
Tea cultivation in Madagascar is primarily concentrated in the eastern highlands, where the humid climate and fertile volcanic soil offer ideal growing conditions. The tea is mostly cultivated on small to medium-sized plantations, where traditional hand-picking methods are still widely used to ensure the quality of the leaves.
In recent years, there has been a growing interest in organic and specialty teas, encouraging producers to adopt more sustainable practices and explore unique local varieties. While Madagascar is not among the world’s largest tea producers, its teas are gaining recognition for their distinctive flavor profiles, shaped by the island’s diverse ecosystems and artisanal processing techniques.
