A child among raw bricks to dry in the sun at a brick factory (Nepal).
Brick production in Nepal is a significant and mostly informal industry with over one thousand kilns operating throughout the country. These kilns use locally sourced clay and have daily production capacities ranging between 15,000 and 50,000 bricks. The sector is highly labor-intensive and energy-consuming, employing hundreds of thousands of workers, many of whom are seasonal or migrant laborers from marginalized groups. The industry has limited regulation, which often results in poor working and living conditions for the workers. Health risks are common as workers are exposed to dust, flames, and pollutants like silica, causing respiratory problems such as chronic cough and bronchitis. A portion of the workforce includes children.
