Portrait of an Akha woman (Laos).
The Akha are an indigenous hill tribe originally from southern China who have migrated over centuries into Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam.
In Laos there are about 113,000 Akha while China counts around 240,000, with many more in neighboring countries.
They speak Akha, a tonal language without a traditional writing system.
Culture is transmitted through oral traditions and genealogies that can be traced back more than sixty generations.
Villages are often marked by carved wooden spirit gates symbolizing the boundary between the human realm and the spirit world.
Akha women are known for elaborate silver headdresses and colored dyed embroidered clothing indicating subgroup and marital status.
The Akha Way or Akhazang blends animism, ancestor worship, shamanism and a deep connection to nature.
Agriculture is central to daily life with crops such as rice, corn, chilies and cabbages replacing former opium cultivation.
Communities often live in remote mountainous areas and may relocate based on spiritual beliefs or environmental needs.
