Portrait of an Indian flautist (Rajasthan, India).
The tradition of flute playing, or flautistry, has a rich history in India and is deeply rooted in the country's classical music traditions. The flute is one of the oldest musical instruments and holds a significant place in Indian classical music. In North India, the flute is an important instrument in Hindustani classical music. Renowned flautists have contributed significantly to this tradition, creating a distinctive style of flute playing. In South India, particularly in the Carnatic classical music tradition, the flute is also a prominent instrument. Similar to vocal and instrumental traditions in Indian classical music, flautists often belong to specific "gharanas", which are musical lineages or schools. Each gharana has its own distinctive style and techniques passed down through generations.
